July 2014 Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Rene Marquis with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. There were 46 members and one guest present. The minutes of the June meeting were approved as published in the July newsletter. Two new members, were voted into the club: Edward W. (Pat) Ryan III , of Altoona, and Arthur K. Cook, of Somerset. Secretary Don Accorsi circulated a flyer (again) for the Golden Age Radio Control Model Meet at the Golden Age Air Museum, Grimes Airfield, Bethel, PA, August 22nd -24th. Vice President Jim Pennington announced the raffle prize: a Nemesis EP ARF with a 39” wingspan. The Treasurer’s report was approved as given by Treasurer Greg Lazarchik. Newsletter Editor Linda Pollock reported that everything is still OK with the newsletter. She also has fliers for the 50th Anniversary Open House Event for members to distribute. Please continue sending her news of your new projects and other activities, and include pictures if possible. You can e-mail them to her at newsletter@lhmac.org. Safety/Field Control Officer Lester Faroux reported that the field is in good shape. He also reported that he requested that the park maintenance use the reel type gang mowers to cut the grass. President Marquis reported that the website is up and running and up to date. Old Business:

  • Fuel Availability: President Marquis reported that fuel is available from him, Vice President Jim Pennington and Safety/Field Control Officer Lester Faroux, at meetings and at the field. The cost is $17.00/gal.
  • Hats & Shirts: President Marquis reported that he has a new shipment of hats available in a number of colors. These will be the last ones available this year.
  • Scale Contest: Chairman is Lucas Morgan. Date still to be announced.
  • Float Fly: Was held on Saturday, June 14th at Acme Dam. It was a beautiful day and there was a nice turnout. Several members from the Mon Valley and Keystone Clippers Clubs also joined us. There were a few mishaps, as usual. Thanks to Bob Stuckert for hauling the rescue boat.
  • Senior Citizens’ Visit: Was held on Thursday, June 19th. John Hathaway reported that they really enjoyed it. We had a good showing of airplanes and pilots to put on a nice show of demo flying to entertain them.
  • Foamie Warbird Pylon Races: Were held on June 29th and July 6th. Chairman Bill Cecchetti, Sr., reported that all went well. The next Race is scheduled for July 20th at 1:00 PM.
  • Endurance Contest: Chairman – Lester Faroux. Was held Sunday, July 6th. Turnout was low, only 5 airplanes, 4 were electric. 30 seconds was not enough time to get the airplane up to the desired altitude and into its flight pattern.
  • Open House Meeting: Was held Thursday, July 10th at 6:30 PM, at the field pavilion, to discuss plans for the September 14th open house. Approximately 16 people attended. The date for the event was changed from Saturday, September 13th to Saturday, August 30th, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Advertizing for the event was agreed as follows: Rene Marquis to call his 3 contacts at the Tribune Review; Dean Pollock to contact the Latrobe Bulletin; Maxine Cook to have an ad placed in the Somerset newspaper; Linda Pollock to make flyers. As part of the entertainment, Bill Cecchetti suggested dropping candy from airplanes for the children. President Marquis also explained that it had been decided at a previous meeting that, instead of including a Wounded Warrior program in this Open House event, the club would just make a direct donation of $200.00 to the AMA for that purpose. A motion was then carried to that effect. Thanks to Linda Pollock for taking notes at that meeting. She also handed out the flyers at tonight’s meeting for members to distribute.
  • 50th Anniversary Jackets: President Marquis is still considering prospective suppliers for our 50th Anniversary LHMAC jackets. Logos and art work are to be embroidered. A decision will be made in August.
  • Refreshments: Thanks to Lester Faroux for procuring the soft drinks for tonight’s meeting. Thanks also to Vishal and Hemilatha Jariwala for their Vanilla Fruit Custard Dessert, and to Art and Maxine Cook for their delicious cookies.

New Business:

  • Float Fly: Saturday, August 2nd, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Chestnut Ridge Park (Acme Dam), rain date August 9th. Still need someone to provide a rescue boat or haul Don’s boat from Jeff Hails’ house to the dam and back. We cannot have the float fly without a rescue boat.
  • Snyder Cup Trials: Have been resurrected. Chairman – Lester Faroux. Sunday, July 20th at 2:00 PM, with rain date July 27th. Two RADAR guns are available. We will also try to resurrect the trophy as well. Would whoever has it please return it to President Rene Marquis or Vice President Jim Pennington?
  • Hedge Trimming Party: Saturday, July 12th at 9:00 AM. Bring trimmers, extension cords, ladders and rakes. Chuck Zera graciously volunteered to bring his power generator. (Thanks, Chuck.) Thanks also to Greg Lazarchik for previously spraying the poison ivy with Poison Ivy Killer. The poison ivy should all be dead by now, but be careful of any that may still be “lurking” there.
  • Tuesday Evening Flying: President Marquis raised a question as to whether or not we should change the Tuesday Evening Flying Events to another evening to improve attendance. After some discussion, the answer was NO, as changing the evening world not make any difference.
  • August Family Picnic: Sunday, August 24th. Chief Cook and Food Chairman is Steve Mickel. Fun Fly Chairman is Lyman Petrosky. Thanks to both for volunteering.
  • Night Flying Event: Tonight, after this meeting until 10:00. Electric only. No gas/glow engines after dusk (8:45).
  • Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be Friday, August 8th, 7:00 PM, at the field pavilion. In the event of rain, the meeting will be moved to Pavilion #13 on the south side of the lake.
